i am going to get a ds pokemon game any recomendations?

In my opinion, you should go with either Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum or Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, I didn't like the Black and White series at all, it is my least favorite Pokemon season, I think Pokemon D/P/Platinum, is the better way to go. HeartGold and SoulSilver was pretty good as well.

@Reece is right. You'll enjoy Diamond/Pearl/Platinum or HeartGold/SoulSilver better than the Gen 5 games (B/W(2)).
Though Wi-Fi termination has happened, disabling the GTS and online battle features on official servers, you can still enjoy a rich and long story in all these games.

But after, if you want to send your Pokémons to X/Y, you'll also need to get a copy of B/W(2), that is almost beaten, because the PokéTransfer (forgot the name since I don't use it anymore) doesn't support Gen IV or below games.

But as said in another thread, there's still a way to access online features in both Gen IV and Gen V games by connecting to an emulated public server, so, features aren't totally disabled.

So, personally, I enjoyed more D/P/Pt/HG/SS than B/W(2).

Platinum all the way. Not only for Cynthia and her awesomeness, but also for the pokemon contests :D

Go with Pokemon Black 2 or White 2 (I'd prefer Black 2) otherwise, you'd be missing out on the whole Gen 5. B2/W2 include all pokes from previous gens, so you won't be missing out on anything. The story is pretty decent then again it's always the same story in Pokemon games, lol. You'll also need B2/W2 to transfer your Pokes over to X/Y.

Or B1/W1. It's not B2/W2 exclusive.
But, yeah, though the story is much the same in all the Pokémon games, some had a more richer one than others. And I think that the Gen IV games had a good story.

Honestly, I prefer Gen 3 over any other gen in terms of gameplay and excitement but Black 2/White 2 seem like a good choice for him.

I loved Pokemon Platinum, great story, great pokemon, great variety of wildlife in the region and the art is lovely.

I'd go for SS/HG. Those were really good remakes of Gold/Silver (if you enjoyed that gen). I personally really liked that gen, and improved graphics and content made it even better.

Go for HG/SS. There is a lot of post-game things you can do. And also, They are remakes. That means they included more adventure!

I know what you mean , black and white is too over done and simple games are better like Heart Gold , Soul Silver they have the touch xD , I don't really know how to explain.

This can be done using the lab in Black/White that allows you to import Pokémons, as B/W can't communicate normally with Gen IV games. I don't exactly remember its location, but you'll access it almost post-game.
Also, hope that you like the annoying mini-game that comes with.

After, if you wish to send them to X/Y, you'll need a license for PokéBank (they could have at least made the box where are the imported Pokémons free...).

They aren't looking good or great. They are great. But, get the one you want the most. If you want to explore Kanto and Johto, go for HG/SS. If you want Sinnoh, go for D/P/Platinum.

Pokemon Platinum and Black/White are my favorite Pokemon games on the DS. They introduced whole new features, different Pokemon, huge cities never seen before and had a lot of upgrades. The Wifi battling available in both games is still enjoyable, (If you use a custom server) and the story itself is good.
My favorite legendary from all the DS games is Giratina. If you catch it in Platinum, you can transfer it to Black/White and then to X/Y.

I'd better not get some hate from genwunners for this I swear.
Pokemon Black and White, in my opinion, had an amazing Storyline. You were chosen by the legendary dragon to fight against the legendary dragon who chose N, to fight for your ideals. For the way the world would be shaped. If he won, people and Pokemon would be separated. So you fight for protecting everyone, so that people and Pokemon could coexist as one.
Now that's pretty frikkin' Epic.

The leap from D/P/Pt/HG/SS was pretty big and it had all the things that make the Pokemon series great. Many competitive Pokes, arguably the best music in the Pokemon Series (Entralink, Legend battle with Mascot/Victini/ Landorus), and moving sprites for longer than two seconds. It had a neat story and some neat cutscenes. My one complaint is the music you hear when your Pokemon is at Red health because it can get annoying. Not much of a nostalgia factor or much replayability but you can face Nimbasa trainers in the domes over and over as well as Cynthia/Miyamoto every day to train your Pokes. The key part of the games is to find the best teams that you like. It is different looks wise compared to playing the lower grade titles but it was for the better (*cough* also search Musical Similarities Thread *cough*).

True. The red health is not a problem for me because you can just turn off the volume if you are annoyed. The storyline was neat, and you had a lot of conflicts with team Plasma and their Grunts. The introduction of big towns and new mechanics really made me love that game.
