It was announced that the WiiU version of Super Smash Bros. 4 will use the Nintendo Figurine Platform.
Here's what Stephan Bole, the director of Nintendo of France said (in French: translation after)

Which means:
And as for release of games produced by Nintendo, there will be Super Smash Bros., a fighting game.
The E3 will also be the occasion to demonstrate the use of the NFC technology [who is used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, allowing the use of real items, here, figurines, in the video games] on Nintendo consoles. The NFC will be used in the WiiU version of Super Smash Bros.

So, basically, we'll be probably getting figurines to use with SSB4 for WiiU. No information has been given about if Nintendo will do the same for the 3DS version of the game.

I hope I don't have to buy figures. But I doubt that the 3ds would have it because it would take some sort of hardware addon to make NFC work on it, right?

Aw... They better make good use of this feature. I liked AR cards better (because you could get images of them online and they'd still work) because why waste some plastic when you can get cardboard and possibly some really cool ideas for ways to obtain in game data that couldn't be used otherwise in the game. Maybe the 3DS will use AR cards while the Wii U will use NFCs. Way to add as many gimmicks as possible to net a profit Nintendo.

Hopefully this feature will be better for smash at least it's not gonna be like pokemon rumble

I hope we can buy them at Wal-Mart, I still never know where they sold the figurines for pokemon rumble u at.

The figures can send and store data. AR Cards, on the other hand, can't store data, as the camera only reads information on them, not transfer.

So does that mean to play the character Pit for example you would need to buy the figurine for him?

Well, I don't really know, since they didn't gave many informations. But, maybe there will be extra characters/stages/Pokémons/items as a DLC.
But don't worry, the characters who were shown are going to be in, and not available as a DLC.

Alright thanks @D4rkDragon wouldn't be surprising if they did release DLC for the new smash bros at some point.

i think that that is cool i hope that for 3ds they use ar cards instead. and we could get new ar cards for new battle areas. but only for single player things not for online.

 Wow, I knew this would've come to an SSB4 version (thought it would've been both), this should be interesting though! I hope that the character-customization moves feature would put this to good use, like if I designed a specific move-set for Rosalina, and I wanna go to a friend's house, to play with them, I can take my figurine, that has all her customized data, and put that to use. That would be amazing, I'm looking forward to what they'll announce at E3, specifically for more NFP data! Nintendo should put this to great use, because it has potential.

The NFP thing is kind of a Gimmick but that gimmick can turn into an innovation like what the The Big N did with the Wii Remotes (Shame on you PSMove and Kinect). Nintendo is the one testing the waters like what I read in most reviews. So if Nintendo makes NFP a hit, maybe Microsoft and Sony would make a move and make one of their own as well. Anyways back to SSB4, I just hope its not like Skylanders that you have to buy a specific figurine to use that character in Smash because if one character seems to be too good and/ or too overpowered, the figurines of that character might get expensive(trust me I know about things like these. I got experience from Yu-Gi-Oh TCG). Another thing to consider is that, they may use miniature stages for it so you can use the NFP sized stage and you can brawl on it. Maybe its for the customizable characters Nintendo is talking about lol NFP has a potential to be a hit when Nintendo uses it lol

So, yeah, I think Nintendo can turn it into an innovation if the system isn't overused just like what Skylanders does.
I think that they could indeed add stages and characters as physical DLCs, but, they might also include it as a digital DLC too, when you think of it.
Since the E3 is starting in a few days, maybe Reggie will tell us more on this subject.

And the 3DS version of Smash Bros. would use AR Cards, like Kid Icarus: Uprising.;)

To clear the idea of AR Cards: It's not possible. It would require the data to be already present on the game card, as AR Cards are only images, and doesn't contain any form of data, where possible figurines for the NFP have an embedded micro-memory who could contain the bonus character's data.

AR Cards would have been a great idea, but technically, it's not possible.

I might have not played Kid Icarus: Uprising but I know you can battle with the AR Cards between different characters in the story.

Yeah, but the data isn't persistent when it's transferred to the 3DS's memory. It would cause the player to reload the data at each battle, and that would be a pain. As I said, AR Cards don't have memory, they just embed a hidden QR-like code that is read some way by the 3DS's camera.

Remember the e-Reader for the GBA? Well, we might get in the same case if Nintendo use AR Cards for bonus content. Not to include people who could scan them and share them. That would be a big loss for Nintendo.

True.

They could, however, put DLC on the 3DS eShop to give us new characters.

I'm hoping the NFC figures are their poses and look like trophies, do you agree.
