Oh, and before I forget, the Wiimote could store a nickname (like instead of Player 1 the thing above your player says ___) on it so if you have to go to someone elses house and play the Wiimote still has a nickname stored on it. Maybe the NFCs could work like that. There could always be game updates/in-game data for AR cards integrated in the 3DS one.

They could, however, put DLC on the 3DS eShop to give us new characters.

That's the best way to go. Both digital and physical versions of the DLC(s) for the game should be available, so, you can either start a nice collection of Nintendo characters in your room, or simply store it to the SD.

Yes, but the Wiimote's memory is really small, and I think that a character's data would be too big anyway to be stored in a AR Card, and even with an update, so back to the idea, either Digital (SD) or Physical release would be the best way.
EDIT: Found the Wii Remote's internal storage capacity. It's a simple 16KiB EEPROM chip. It's even smaller than what I thought.
