The old ones are great and give you that good retro feeling of excellent platforming while the new ones are great as well and give you that 4 player co-op mayhem with friends. They are all great in my opinion. I think it's extremely hard to adequately determine which version of Mario is the best. Each game has been a hit, critically and by the public. I don't know how, Nintendo has always manages to deliver the same sense of magic in each iteration of the game.

Retro all the way. I mean the new innovations in the New Super Mario Bros Games are all good and fine, but I still prefer Mario World or Mario bros 3 over it. I just grew up with those Retro games and thats why I like them more.

It is hard to decide since it isn't a solid classic or modern version of Mario like Sonic.

If it wasn't for Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World, I would choose retro anyways. So right now it is a tie.

I love playing retro mario games, like the original super mario or super mario 3. But to be honest, I am not against new stuff, and what this kind of stuff offers, was not present some time ago, I mean, in the previous Mario games. So, even though I enjoy playing retro mario a lot, I still love to be impressed by what it is fresh and new in the recent titles.

I like retro the most!
It gives flashbacks to my child hood!

new! mainly because the new songs personally are more memorable like cocoanut mall, wario goldmine, the second part of the credits theme on Mario kart Wii! athletic themes from both Yoshi's story and new super Mario bros Wii. now you can be your mii in races on the Mario kart series! more expansive level's and better graphics! personally I think the old games are kinda boring and the new game are a lot more fun in comparison!

To choose between a bad looking and bad designed game by today's standards, or a better looking and better designed game in comparison?

Of course, I pick the new ones. They are, quite simply, objectively superior to the retro ones. Enjoyment value WILL differ, especially among people who grew with the older ones, but from an entirely technical standpoint, the new ones are superior.

Both retro Mario and modern Mario are great, with neither one really outshining the other. Retro has classics like the original three Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario World, while modern has Mario games that are equally as classic, with fantastic titles such as Super Mario Galaxy 1-2, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Maker.
