When you start your journey she sends you off to professor oak, saying "All boys leave home someday" this explains two things. One: SHE KNOWS everyone leaves home, and the only ways she R could be sure is that she left home herself to become a trainer!' Second:She knows Oak is the leading authority in Pokemon. She MUST know decent knowledge about pokemon to know this.
So using the above information we can infer that she once went on a Pokemon Journey and completed it. To complete a pokemon journey means you had to beat the elite four and YES, become champion. Gary beat red's mom, which is why he was so cocky when he faced red, which led to his downfall! You, as the son of the first female champion, hold the family mantle in your hands!
