Jess + Vanessa

Vanessa moved to a populated town in North Carolina shortly after her house was taken away, very shut off from the world and few friends she had in New York. About a week later, Nessa started attending the High School a few streets away from her new house. She made good grades and was one of the more shy girls in her class. One day when she was walking home, a group of upperclassmen tailed her into an alley. Not wanted to cause trouble, Vanessa started to speed up, when one of the boys turned the corner and pinned her against the wall.
“Where you off to little miss?” a tall boy with short spiked blonde hair asked. He then beckoned to his friends. They all started to gather in front of Vanessa, when a steel toed boot kicked the blonde onto the street. A tough looking girl with multicolored hair was standing in the middle of the group of boys, with one quick motion, she punched one of the smaller boys on the nose, causing him to fall to the gravel and clutch his bleeding nose.
“Get lost or bleed from your ears,” the girl said, standing her ground. The group ran to the nearby streets. Vanessa slumped to the ground, putting her hands in her face, soft tears beginning to flow. The girl got on her knees and pushed Vanessa’s hair back, saying “It will be alright, you’re safe.” The girl helped Vanessa up and pulled out an umbrella, it was starting to drizzle a kind rain. “The name’s Jess by the way, you?”
“I-it’s Vanessa. Vanessa Sailyn. I moved here a few weeks ago, I thought everyone would just ignore me if I stayed shut out from other people. Thank you for helping me…” Vanessa said in a small and gentle voice.
“No problem, it’s what friends are for silly. Now then, let’s get you home. I’m in the same grade as you, I saw you were alone at lunch today, and noticed those boys kept staring at you and laughing. So I followed them when I noticed they started to walk towards you. I’m not much of a friend maker as you can tell, but I’m sure we will be best friends.” Jess said, helping Vanessa up the steps to her house. “Sit by me at lunch tomorrow, ok?”
“Sure… friend,” Vanessa said, closing the front door.
