Phineas' Death

Phineas' Death

Vanessa felt mixed heats and chills around her, each grazing against her skin. “You are getting better with your senses,” Cyrus remarked, giving Vanessa a reassuring smile. Vanessa stopped focusing and began to twirl at a strand of hair, smiling at the ground.

“Thank you,” she said. “May I ask you something,” Vanessa questioned, peering up at Cyrus.

“Sure, anything,” he answered, tilting his head. He turned and motioned Vanessa to follow. They wandered down a small path in the forested area of the park. Reds, yellows, and browns fell from the gray sky. The wind was cooled.

“What are the limits? How far can someone trained like you, sense angelic or demonic presence?” Vanessa asked with her hands in her pocket. She could still feel the tingles on her skin.

“Well,” Cyrus began, “we can sense better if the demon or angel in question is particularly powerful. Weaker entities we can sense but only within a bound area.”

“You said that we do not harm anything that is not causing pain to others. We can sense their presence, but how do we know if they are doing anything wrong?” Vanessa pondered. They stopped at a tiny playground. Children were playing joyfully, their minds at ease.

“Everyone has a choice in this world, even demons. To choose the light over darkness, or right over wrong, is up to the person. We’ve only been teaching you to sense angels and demons. Soon you’ll get to sense the happiness in syntians. The children here, for example, have no illnesses nor negativity within them. When you learn that, you’ll-” Cyrus was cut off by a calming melody in Vanessa’s pocket. Vanessa reached in and scrolled onto her phone.

“Hello?” Vanessa answered. The was silence in the air. Suddenly, Vanessa heard desperation and pain on the other end. “Jess calm down what happened?”

“No time, I’m coming to get you, where are you?” Jessica stated ecstatically.

“West Park, by the central gate. Jess, I need to know-” Vanessa started but was interrupted by a loud horn in the parking lot. Vanessa ended the call and began to run towards the familiar silver car. “Thanks for the practice Cy, I’ll talk to you later,” she called behind her. Vanessa glided into the seat. Before she could put her seatbelt on, the car was flying out of the lot. Vanessa glanced over to see Cyrus’ glum face as he motioned a circle around his heart. The car rushed into the main streets, Jess slamming the horn at the vehicles in front of her.

“Jessica. What is wrong?” Vanessa demanded, placing her hand on Jess. Jessica’s body relaxed, her knuckles were white.

“It’s Dad. His medicines stopped working, he was rushed to the emergency room. I got the call a few minutes ago. Thank you for being close by, um,” Jess rambled. Vanessa could see the hurt in her dark gray eyes. They rounded the corner and parked, the hospital lights glaring on her car window. They rushed out of the car and ran into the building, Jessica speeding to the desk.

“Phineas Beighn, what is the room number?” Jess stammered.

“Who are you in relation to-” the receptionist began.

“We are his bloody daughters, what is the room number?” Jess screamed, tears in her eyes.

“Um, I-I um. I will look up Mr. Beighn’s status, please be patient,” the woman answered. Jess’ hands were on the counter, her fingertips gliding across the surface. She stared at the woman as if she were prey. “I’m sorry but Mr. Beighn is currently under emergency care, we simply cannot allow visitors at this-” Before she could finish Jess ran passed and into the emergency center. “Security!” the woman called. Vanessa began running after Jessica as a guard grabbed her. Vanessa’s body tensed as she quickly went forward.

“Get off me!” Jessica screeched. Vanessa placed her hand on the guard and looked into his eyes.

“Please stop…” Vanessa said in her alluring voice. The guard’s hands slowly fell and he was entranced by Vanessa. “You can go back to your regular duties, there is no harm here.” The guard looked dazed as he walked passed Vanessa into the other room. Vanessa closed her eyes and felt the warm entities around her. Room 231 my dear… Vanessa heard a sweet voice say in her head.

“It’s room 231, Jessica. Trust me,” Vanessa stated as they began to search for the room. They found the room and tried to enter but one of the doctors stopped them.

“I know you are upset but you cannot speak to him. We put him into a coma so the medicines can take effect. However, the medicine at hand is fairly new so the effects we do not know. It was very sudden. With his condition we had no other choices,” the doctor said as he realized the look of anger on Jessica’s face. “H-he told us to do this. And he required you to know that he is sorry and he wishes that you do not do anything bad.” he ended. Jessica stared at the wall, her fist clenched.

“Just open the door…” She said.

“Are you sure? There may-”

“Open. The door,” Jessica said harsher. “Please,” she pleaded, her voice becoming fainter. The doctor unlocked the door and Jessica hurried in, followed by Vanessa. Jessica ran to the bed, placing her hand on Phineas’ arm. “Daddy?” she whispered, her voice quiet. She glared at Vanessa and grabbed her hand. “Please. Can you do anything? Please try, I uh-” she said quickly and desperate. Vanessa stared back into Jess’ eyes. She then placed her hand on his head and closed her eyes. Vanessa could sense a faint warmth from his body.

“Please help him,” she whispered, as her hand began to glow a faint pink. The heart-rate monitor began to pick up as Phineas opened his eyes.

“Rosie...is that you?” He asked, stretching his hand out. He glimpsed over at Jessica, his face perplexed. “Oh… I did not want you to see me like this my darling,” he sighed. “I thought you would not come to see me, so I told them to put me into a coma until what happens happens, but I guess they did not wish to do that…” Jessica’s hands dropped from his side.

“Why would I not come to see you?” Jessica stated in an angry tone. “You are the best father I could ask for. Sure you can be a real pain at times but that doesn’t make my opinion of you any different.”

“That is true… I have been so rude to you and your friend here. I’m so sorry Vanessa, dear. It was never you, it was me. Every time I looked into your face, I saw Rose staring back. I didn’t want you in Jess’ life at first because I was worried it would bring back bad memories for her. But I guess I was wrong. You helped her become a wonderful young woman and you helped me see what a great daughter she truly is. I’m so happy that you are with her,” he finished. Vanessa felt a chill in her body. She quickly glanced at Jessica, her eyes serious.

“What is it?” Jess ordered.

“She is trying to you that my time is nearly up, my princess. When you are close to dying, your eyes open much broader than before,” Phineas stated, staring at his IV. “Your wings will be quite beautiful one day,” he finished, staring at Vanessa. Jessica rose up, her hands gripped her jacket.

“No, you can’t leave me! I won’t allow it! I’ll have every single divine being come down here to save you if I must,” Jess stammered, her voice becoming quiet. Vanessa looked at her with a saddened look. She was about to speak before Phineas reached out to his daughter. Jess looked up and took his hand.

“Jessica. You are the best daughter I could have ever asked for. What you are feeling now is the same way I felt years ago after his funeral when you were rushed to the hospital. I thought I was going to lose you forever. We both know what it is like to lose a loved one, Jessica. Please promise me that you will be careful and live your life,” he said as the monitor’s beeps began to slow. “Vanessa… please look after,” he said before pausing, “your sister.”

“I will,” Vanessa assured. Phineas looked back up into Jessica’s eyes.

“I love you,” he said as he pulled Jess into a hug.
Jess could still hear the high-pitched ring in her ears.
