“Do you guy’s hear that?” Newt asked. Everyone stopped what they were doing and listened.
“Wait a minute; I know that sound.” Thomas ran outside. Sure enough, he was right.
“The box is coming back up!” The announcement went throughout the Glade. The noise stopped and the plates opened. Galley and Newt got there first and opened the box.
“What do you see?” Chuck called out. Newt looked at the others with a surprised expression.
“There are two girls in here!” He called out. Thomas leaned in to look. Sure enough, there were two girls. One was unconscious; the other had her arms around the unconscious one in a protective matter.
The conscious one had long, dirty blonde hair that covered her right eye. The eye that you could see was a light shade of blue. She was very thin, almost scrawny, but you could see some strength in her arms. You could also tell she was tall and could run. When Galley stepped closer she, impossibly, tensed even more.
“Take it easy. We won’t hurt either of you, understand?” Galley asked in a gentle way. The girl seemed to relax a little bit. She moved away from the unconscious girl and let Galley and Newt check her vitals. The girl surveyed the crowd around her and locked her eyes on Thomas.
“Teresa talked about you. You knew each other. Didn’t you, Thomas?” Everyone looked up at Thomas and she used the distraction to knock Newt and Galley away. They fell and she jumped on their backs and leaped out of the box. She shoved the other boys away and started running for the Maze.
The other boys thought she would fall like Thomas did, so they stayed and watched. Once she got to the place Thomas fell, she tripped. She rolled, sprung right back up, and kept running. Galley grabbed a pike and ran after her.
“If you don’t stop I’ll throw this!” Galley warned when he got close. She turned around suddenly and started running back. She ran past Galley and came toward the boys. They all scattered except for Chuck and Thomas.
“Everybody move!” Galley called and threw the pike. It soared over the others and hit the girl in the leg as she tried to grab Thomas. She rolled for a bit, then didn’t move. Thomas moved closer despite everyone’s warnings. That was a big mistake. The girl jumped up and held a knife to his throat.
“Stay back!” She yelled. Everyone froze. She tightened her grip on the knife.
“This knife will stay here until you tell me what I want to know. Got it?” She pressed the blade tighter against Thomas’s neck. Newt climbed out of the hole.
“What is this place? Who are you? How did you get here? And why are we here?” Newt stepped forward and the knife was pressed harder.
“This is the Glade. I’m Newt. I run this place when Alby isn’t here. We got here the same way as you did. We don’t know why they sent you two here or anyone else for that matter. Now, would you please put the knife down?” The girl slowly put the knife down, but still held on to Thomas.
“Where, exactly, is the Glade?” Newt stepped forward and the knife went up again.
“We answered your questions. Will you please let Thomas go now?” Newt stepped up and lowered her knife for her.
The girl reached down and pulled the pike out of her leg. She held it at Newt as she let Thomas go. She swung the pike around and started answering the questions that everyone was thinking.
“My name is Selene. I’ve always had this knife. I only know his name and face. And I remember how to run and fight. Teresa is my friend, I’d know her anywhere. Oh yeah, guy that threw the pike, great aim.” Selene fell onto her knees and grabbed her leg. Blood was spurting out of it and she fainted.
