Selene looked beautiful. She was standing on a sand dune facing the sunset. Thomas stood close behind her.
“Selene.” She turned to face Thomas. He stepped closer and looked into her blue eye.
“Why won’t you talk to any of us anymore? Ever since we got you out of that room you haven’t spoken a single word.” Selene looked away. Thomas waited for a minute, then turned away.
“I can’t.” Thomas spun back around.
“What do you mean you can’t?” Selene turned back to him with pain in her eye.
“I can’t talk for long.” Thomas looked back at the others in the shelter of a fallen building.
“Why not?” Selene moved her hair away from the back of her neck. Thomas looked and saw a mark branded onto her skin. Selene put her hair pack in place and looked at him.
“They made me silent. If I talk too long, I can’t breathe.”
“Selene, why didn’t you tell anyone this?”
“She told me.” Teresa came up behind them. Thomas looked at her in a confused way.
“What? When did she..?”
“At the room. That’s what she was telling me with her hands. We came up with it when we were kids.” Selene nodded and smiled.
“If you made it up when you were kids, wouldn’t you have forgotten that?” Thomas asked. Selene stopped smiling and looked to Teresa. They looked at each other for a minute, then Selene went back to join the others.
“They started giving us back our memories.”
