“What’s up with her?” Vince asked gesturing to Selene, who was leaning against Minho.
“W.C.K.D. happened to her. She’s weak and can’t breathe if she talks. Is there anything you could do to help her or Brenda?” Vince shrugged.
“No. But maybe you can.” Mary walked up to them. Selene signed something and Teresa nodded.
“Yeah, I think she’s higher in rank than Vince too.” Mary smiled. She gestured to the medical tent and had Thomas, Minho, and Selene come. Teresa tried to follow, but Selene told her to stay.
“What happened to Selene?” Mary asked. Thomas and Minho exchanged glances.
“Well, in the Maze, there are the creatures that we call Grievers. They have these needles on their tails that sting people. Once they get stung, the needle releases a poison that leaves the person weak and in pain without the antidote.
“During a fight with a bunch of these, she got stung twice in the gut. No one could give her any antidote but she was still stronger than most of us. Before W.C.K.D. took us out of the Maze, one of our friends got stung and tried to kill me.
“She jumped in front of me and got shot in the same place as the stings. At the fake sanctuary, they made her unable to talk for long without losing her breath. We saw that happen when we were trying to find you guys. Let me tell you, her interrogating tactics are flawless.” Mary smiled and asked the boys to leave for a minute.
“We’ve got what we need to help Brenda. Selene will be awhile, but they’ll both be alright.” Minho nodded and turned to leave. Thomas hesitated, then left too.
