“Selene! Brenda! Where are you?” Thomas shouted as he watched the medical tent burn in front of him. Brenda surprised him from behind.
“You stupid idiot.” She started dragging him behind her as they ran off.
“Wait a minute, where’s Selene?” A loud gun shot came from behind them and Thomas found Selene. She was firing at the fighters with deadly accuracy. Selene finally lowered her gun as the last fighter fell. She was about to turn around when another gun fired. She dropped her gun and started to fall.
“Selene!” Thomas caught her and lowered her gently to the ground. Blood was pouring from her chest. He tried to stanch the bleeding with his hand. He looked up and saw Janson lower his gun and run to the airship with Minho being dragged close behind. Teresa was already there and watching.
“Thomas. Listen to me.” Selene’s voice was filled with pain.
“No, don’t say anything. We’ll find some one who can help. You’re gonna be alright, I promise.” Thomas looked up at everyone that had gathered when they saw her fall.
“Thomas, don’t make promises you know you can’t keep.” Selene advised.
“Thomas.” Newt knelt down and put his hand on Thomas’s shoulder. His voice cracked. “She’s not gonna make it.”
“Don’t say that! There’s still a chance. We have to at least try.” But Thomas knew better. There was so much blood; it was seeping through his fingers. Newt stood up and walked away, not wanting to see Thomas lose his mind. The others followed. Teresa got a clear view of her best friend dying in Thomas’s arms.
“No. What have I done? This isn’t what I wanted. No one was supposed to die, especially not Selene!” She sobbed into her hands and collapsed onto her knees.
“Thomas.” Selene pushed Thomas’s hand away, making her blood pour even faster.
“No, Selene. I’m not going to sit here and watch you die when I can do something to help!” Thomas tried to put his hand back but Selene held his hand with a tight grip.
“I know. Do you remember what I said I would do with the bronze flower?” Selene pulled it out of her jacket pocket. It was tinted red with her blood. Thomas nodded.
“You said you would give to the person who loved you.” Selene nodded and put the flower in his hand. He held it and her hand close to his heart. He moved her hair away from her eye and gazed lovingly into it. Her gold eye gazed back at him, full of life, but quickly emptying.
“And who I loved back.” Selene finished for him and smiled. Then Selene’s eyes lost their spark, and she exhaled for the last time. Her hand dropped to her side and Thomas was left with a blood-bronze flower in his hand. He held her close to him and sobbed.
“Thomas.” He looked up and saw Aris standing over him. “We need to get out of here. They’re coming back.” Thomas nodded and grabbed Selene’s gun. He put it in Selene’s hand and crossed it over her chest. He stood up and with the flower clasped tightly in his hand, he did the hardest thing anyone could ever do. He let her go.
The End
Ha! I know, I'm evil. But this is me, so you might want to get used to it.
