Chapter 29

Andy regained consciousness but he didn’t open his eyes. He wanted to see if the situation was favorable for giving away his awareness of his surroundings. He was still in the ocean; the temperature had returned to what felt like normal ocean temperature. He rode along the waves when he became aware that there was something holding onto him and pulling his ear. It hurt, but he needed to stay out to be sure if it were a friend or foe. He waited until he was face up and floating on his back. When that happened, he opened his eyes. It was nighttime, and the only hint as to what species his rescuer might be is that it was orange. As his body tipped over to the side once more he held his breath to endure the tumbling.

After what felt like an hour of enduring this, Andy felt like he was suddenly being dragged against something hard and grainy. As he was pushed further he realized that this was sand. This was going to be the most annoying thing in the world to get out of his fur, but that was the least of his worries. Almost as soon as he was settled in the sand, the rescuer collapsed on the sand. Andy was soon able to identify the person as female due to the pitch and tone of the gasping she was making. He continued to close his eyes until he heard a thump! on the sand, and the gasping slowed down. After about 10 minutes or so, Andy opened his eyes and looked towards the voice. His rescuer was a Buizel, and she looked like she had been swimming for days to save Andy.

Andy looked around. There was no one in sight for a while. However, they needed to find a place to crash, and they needed to do it without being discovered. He suddenly became aware that he still had his backpack, miraculously. He took it off, but he wasn't sure if it would be worth checking, with all the electronic things that could've gotten ruined. All he needed was the ring. He found it, but decided to see if the other machinery worked as well. To his surprise, all of it worked.

Guess Pokeuman stuff is waterproof.

He put all of the things back and slipped on the ring. The Buizel became another problem; she didn't have any humanizing ring, and he didn't have a means to hide her. As he thought long and hard for a way to get around this problem, he sighed as he opened the backpack zipper a bit more. He carefully picked up the Buizel and stuffed her inside his backpack in the least painful way possible. He zipped up the backpack, but left the zipper open a little so she could breathe. With a final swing of his backpack, he now looked like a human kid carrying a backpack and messy with sand. With no other alternative, he began walking forward.

Andy noticed that there were plenty of palm trees around the area he was walking. This meant he was in some sort of tropical place. He continued walking until he saw some lights up ahead. As he trudged closer he saw that it was a hotel building. He entered, and found that the receptionist he was supposed to check in with was asleep on the counter.

Poor girl, Andy thought. He didn't want to wake her up; he was plenty tired himself. He took the clipboard and wrote his name down on it. He looked behind the counter to find the keys needed, so he took one, wrote it on the list, and finally left the money needed to check in.

When he entered the room, he locked the doors and threw the ring on the table. He wanted to just collapse on the bed, but he knew that would spread sand, and he wouldn't be a fan of that when he was fully awake. So he opened his backpack and carefully lifted the Buizel. He brushed the sand out of her fur, gave her a light rinse to wash off the ocean on her, and carefully tucked her into one of the beds. He also brushed the sand form his fur and took a shower as well. When all that was done, he laid in his bed and almost immediately was knocked out.

When he woke up the next morning, Andy checked on the Buizel. She looked plenty more relaxed than before, and seemed less in pain. As Andy got out of and made the bed, she stirred for a little before resting. Andy turned to find that the Buizel had her eyes open and looking intently on Andy.

“Um…good morning?” Andy said awkwardly. How strange would it be to wake up in a place you don’t know after some huge event happened to yourself just recently. He couldn’t help but chuckle slightly. It would seem awfully familiar to most Pokeumans.

“Uh-huh.” She sat up and slid off the bed, and she began walking towards the door.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to see what base we’re in.”

“Base? This is a hotel. A normal hotel. The only reason we got here without being caught is because I put you in my backpack.”

“Oh shoot! That means everyone really is dead!”

“Yeah. A guy named Vincent killed a lot of people. Were you in that base?”

“Yes! One moment I was having a good time, and the next people are dropping dead!”

“Yikes. You seem to be taking it…rather well, actually.”

“Well, crying is not going to solve anything, huh? It’s a luxury I can’t afford to have right now.”

“No crying ‘til the end, huh?”

“Uh-huh.” Just for fun, Andy decided to use his aura powers.

“Yet, it’s still tearing you apart on the inside, huh?”

“Correct. I think it’s this thing called survivor’s guilt.”

“So do you mean everyone is dead at your base?”

Everyone.Oh dang, that must’ve been an enormous death count. Andy thought.

“So, what are you going to do now?”

“Hm…I don’t know. What are you going to do?”

“Your guess is as good as mine, looks like.” They both sat in the room and sighed. What was he going to do to now? West, Claire, and Josh are all gone, and he had no idea where he needed to go. He breathed silently; the best way to handle any situation, he learned, was to remain calm and tactically assess the situation.

Let me see here…I came into a hotel, and the hotel had a receptionist, and receptionists help people, and people come to hotels because…“I’m going to go out of the room for a few minutes, would you mind staying here for about 5 minutes?”

“Sure.” Andy slapped a ring on-the result earning a jump from the Buizel-and stepped outside the room. When he got to the main room, there were people hanging around the place and the receptionist was wide awake now. Andy didn’t have a need for any of them; he walked towards the entrance and found a guidebook. Upon close inspection, he found that it was the guidebook for Maldives.

Well, ain’t I the lucky one?

He put the book back and returned to the room.

“This is Maldvies.” Her eyes widened.

“Holy cow, I swam that far for that long?! I’ve clearly underestimated myself for a moment there. So, do you know what you’re going to do now?

Andy gave that a thought. His first instinct was to go after the gear himself, but considered if that would be wise. His friends were away and he had no idea if he could handle whatever guardian may be present at the gear. Then again, doing nothing would be tempting fate in a way that wasn’t in Andy’s favor. He had no idea if Pokextinction would appear today, tomorrow, or next week, so he needed to act quickly.

“Now that I know where I am, I actually need to find something here.” He said. He was telling the truth, but he didn’t need to tell her what he was looking for safety reasons.

“Huh. Would you like my help?” Andy had another dilemma cross his mind. If she helped, would that be putting her in so much danger?

Well, she did say something about underestimating herself. Who knows how long she’s been swimming for?

He took a deep breath and said “Sure. I’ll take all the help I can get.”

“Great! Now, do you remember the last time you had it?”

“I’ve never had it before.”

“What? Then why’re you…wait, is this like a treasure hunt?” He nodded. “Well okay Indie, where is it?”

“I don’t know, I’m supposed to feel it close.”

“…What?! That’s a stupid method of finding it!”

“Yeah, but it’s the only way.”

She sighed. “Okay, tell me what I have to do.”

“I can’t bring you out of the open, I only have one ring and it’s not exactly a look-at-a-treasure-map kinda treasure.”

“Can’t I wear the ring?”

“How long have you been a Pokemon?”

“About 4 weeks.”

“Yeah, this thing’ll probably kill you; your genes haven’t really settled in yet.”

“Aw shucks.”

“You can fit in my backpack. Do you still want to come with me?”

“It would probably be a good idea not to.”

“Okay, I’ll get you a snack or something to keep you fed and alive while I’m gone. See ya.” Andy put on his ring and began to walk out the door.

“Hold! I never got your name.”

“Right, sorry, name’s Andy.”

“Kyree.”

“Pleasure’s mine.”

“Same here.”

After getting a snack for Kyree, Andy was walking along the beach. He had to shoulder by many of the other visitors of the island and walked through a line of vendors.

“Excuse me sir, would you like to try a sample of a shishkabob?”

“Don’t mind if I do.” Andy said as he took the stick and began munching on it.

Soon the visitors and travelers began to dwindle in number the farther he walked until there was hardly anyone there. When the coast was clear, Andy hid amongst the trees and slipped off his ring. He finished off the shishkabob and looked up into the trees. As he looked up, it almost seemed like a voice started talking to him.

His adventure started on a day like most others. Then with the minor detail he discovered in the mirror came a new life full of opportunities. He had become a member of the PRT and saved a Jirachi. He stopped Vincent numerous times and collected five of the eight gears so far. West, Claire, and Josh. His friends had supported him on his journey all over the world on a trip that would shake the core of most people, human or Pokemon. The enemies have gotten stronger, but so has he.

And now it’s time to return to the adventure. He stood up, put on his ring and walked out. He continued the direction he was travelling at until he could see a faint glow on his charm, despite the bright sun reflecting light on the sand. Andy closed his eyes and found an aura trail. With all the time he had, he figured it would be a good idea to follow it for now.

As he followed the aura trail he noticed the sun was sinking on the other horizon. The sky was turning red and to colors were fading. With this new lighting he found that the aura trail led underwater. It went under the waves and into the coral reef, which then penetrated the ground. He began nibbling on his knuckle in deep thought as to how this situation would be handled as he walked back towards the hotel.

The sun sank further into the horizon, and the skies turned a beautiful color of red and purple. The ocean wasn’t quite as blue as it was before, now it was reflecting the rippling sun. The huts that were floating on the ocean now had lights turning on inside as people were about to retire for the day. Andy walked up to the hotel, threw his stick away, and entered the room. Kyree was nibbling on the snacks that Andy got her.

“Did you find it?”

“Well, no I didn’t. I have a good idea where it is, but I can’t reach it.”

“Is it high up on a tree?”

“No, I think it’s into the water and under the ground. The trail I found goes through the ground.” Kyree looked up from her snacks.

“I can help! Let me help you out.”

“Are you sure you want to?”

“Of course. It would be a lot of fun, and I can warm up for my own goal.”

Andy nodded his head and smiled. “Alright! We’ll leave at night when everyone else is asleep. Meanwhile, I sure am hungry! I only had a shishkabob!”
