Pokeumans: Chapter 37

Chapter 37

Andy woke up early in the morning, before his alarm went off. It was ten minutes before it was supposed to go off. On a normal day, Andy would’ve quickly went back to sleep to see how many minutes he could fit in to his sleep before he would actually need to wake up, but he didn’t feel tired. He disabled the alarm and sat up in bed, wondering to himself what is going to happen today.

Right, we’re going places today.

He just continued to stare at his blankets for some time. His mind was blank and he didn’t feel motivated to get up and about. As exciting as the thought of travelling to new worlds was, it didn’t seem to make him get him out of bed faster.

After about 10 minutes he willed himself to get out of bed, hop onto the floor, get out the door and go to breakfast. When he finished eating he walked into the hall and headed towards the headmaster’s office. He saw Pokemon and Pokextinction grunts alike moving in and out between the fake wall, moving parts and boxes that looked really heavy. Rufus was in the center of the movement directing where each box and part should go, and Xander stayed in his office to make sure nobody stole any private information. It looked like nobody wanted Andy around right now, so he left to see if he could be entertained somewhere else. When he ran out of ideas, he went back to his room and browsed on TVtropes for a while.

His friends woke up and greeted him before going their own separate ways before they left on their own ways. After he had his fill of trope browsing he just decided to take a walk. His walk took him towards the headmaster’s office, where the moving of parts had been finished, and now the machine was getting installed. When eh went up to the headmaster’s office, he was blocked by some grunts.

“No one is allowed inside the office room.”

“Not even to volunteer to help? I’ve had some experience in engineering and building.”

“This isn’t a matter of experience; it’s about privacy. Can’t let just anyone wandering in to see this, yeah?”

“I guess you’re right.”

“Well done. We’ll call for you when they are ready for you.”

Andy sighed as he turned around and walked away. He didn’t want to feel useless by just being around, he wanted to do something productive. He went back to the gym and walked around. He soon found a door, and inside were lots of sporting equipment that looked nothing too special from normal gyms and recreation buildings, but what interested Andy was the huge glass balls that were left scattered around. He picked one up curiously to inspect it. Andy noticed that the ball was darkening, and Andy strained his eye to see the darkening ball.

My vision must be whack.

Andy went and turned on the lights for the storage closet. Andy was mistaken in believing his vision was getting darker, but the ball itself took on a brownish color. Andy picked up another ball to experiment, and it turned a solid color of gray. He took a moment studying the balls, they were very intriguing and strange.

“What are you doing here?” Andy jumped when someone came from behind. He saw it was a Gastrodon that wore a set of keys over its neck.

“Sorry, I had nothing to do for a while, and I wanted to explore. I’ll put these balls back…”

“No, hang on a second.” The Gastrodon thought for a moment before lifting its head. “We have a free day today, so I guess if we rack up enough people we can play with those.”

Play with what? These?

They collected all the balls and set them out onto the gym floor. Some of the students that were in the gym seemed excited with the balls. Some ran up to help with set up and some ran out to go get their friends. When all the balls came out, there was a notable size difference between the students before the balls came and after they showed up. Andy joined with the mass and waited for instruction. He wanted to know what the balls were for.

“Hey y’all, let’s play dodgeball!” The students let out a big “Yay!” and they quieted down. “Let’s pick our captains. Would the Lucario that was in the gym closet come up?”

“Me?”

“Yup. Come on up!” Andy got up and went to the teacher’s side.

“Josh! I see you there! Come up here!” Andy turned and saw Josh walking up to the other side.

“We just keep coming up on different sides, huh?”

“Yeah, it’s kinda crazy.”

“We just don’t want you both to double-team the rest of the students.” The Gastrodon said.

Knowing what the captain does, Andy and Josh took turns picking their separate teammates. It alternated one after another until everyone had been on a team. Now they stood at the far end of the gym, with the glass balls lined up neatly on the line between the sides.

“Ready? Get Set…”

“Is this like normal dodgeball or-?”

“Go!”

Suddenly there was a stampede of feet slamming the ground as each team sought out the ammo. Other Pokemon strategically stayed behind as to not crowd the sides and get in the way of their teammates. Andy did the same. Since this was Pokeuman dodgeball, he figured it best to just stay back and see what goes on.

The glass balls turned into different colors. He saw a Meganium lob a green ball at a Prinplup, who caught it, but had vines growing all over their arms. He saw a Machamp throw a bright orange ball at a Braviary, who simply dodged it like it was no problem.

“Andy, watch out!” A voice cried, and he got down as he saw a blue orb torpedo towards him. He ducked, and he could hear a large watery splash from behind him as the ball bounced off the wall. Despite being made of glass, they were as bouncy as rubber.

Andy picked a ball up and began to realize what was going on. The balls were mimicking the typing of the Pokemon it was held by, and each type had a different effect. He quickly experimented and was able to rapidly make his ball change colors from orange to gray, like a Christmas light. Dual typings were taken to account, too. Andy looked up and launched an orange ball at a Glaceon, and it hit against his body and sent him flying back to the wall. Apparently fighting types give an extra kick.

He charged up a steel ball and lobbed it at a Jigglypuff, who got incased in a larger steel ball and was magnetized to the ceiling. Due to how the ceiling was angled, the magnetic forces rolled the ball out of bounds from the gym. Andy caught a bright red ball, but immediately dropped it when it was searing hot.

They continued for a while. Tossing balls over, getting hit, and coming back onto the stage in a continuous cycle. Andy got a lot of practice: he was an excellent dodger and catcher but his throwing was screwy, but due to the amount of time they played he soon got the hang of it. Soon the matches rolled down until it was just him and Josh.

They stood at opposite ends of the battle field, and it seemed like time slowed almost to a halt. Once again Andy could’ve sworn he heard the theme from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly playing as they looked at each other. Things picked up the pace when Josh threw a ball and Andy dodged. Andy was a fighting type, and Josh, being an Ice and Dark type, would be finished almost at the graze of a fighting ball. He charged one up and tossed it at the Weavile, but he was not to disappoint with his speed.

They continued like this, and the students on each side soon gave up the idea of coming back onto the floor with the notion that this was a battle between two friends for themselves to enjoy. Andy did a lunge as a ball whizzed past and he countered with his own. He got so into the fight now, all he could see were the balls and his target. It would only be over if one of them tripped, slipped in focus, or got tired.

Andy was determined not to be the goat of this situation. He leaned over to dodge a ball, and immediately went after it to pick it up. However, in his hurry, he slipped on his own paws and body slammed the floor, feeling all the wind getting knocked out. He almost jumped back up to the ball and grabbed it. Behind him, Andy could hear the wind of an incoming ball and threw it. The balls came into contact, with the ice ball shattering as a fighting ball pelted through, and Josh, being on the other side, was taken aback by his surprise that he did not see the ball coming for him, and it struck.

The gym exploded into cheers. He could even hear the Jigglypuff he capsuled applaud as her steel prison slowly lost its magnetic charge and floated downwards, almost like a balloon slowly losing air. He walked over to the other side and helped Josh get up. They high fived each other as assign of mutual respect for each other, and they left to help clean up.

Troy came in almost just as they finished cleaning. “Hey guys, we’re all ready for you now. C’mon over and we’ll get started.”

Andy and Josh bid their farewells and left for the office. Andy had been personally excited for what the machine would look like.

“Oh,” Troy stopped them. “Make sure you two get your backpacks and whatever else you need. We don’t know how long we plan to be there, so it would be wise to plan ahead.” Andy ran back into his room and grabbed his bag and belongings. He was so excited to find different worlds. Travel and exploration had always been something he looked forward to, and now he was about to embark on a travelling trip without parallel.

He went to the main office and found Claire, West, and Josh all suited up like he was.

“You ready?”

“Yeah.” Andy was finally excited to see this all be over. He was about to save the world by stopping the evil mastermind behind it all, and how many other people could say that?

They went inside the office and into Xander’s personal quarters, where they found that the room had extended so much he though it was a different room. There were tracks along the wheels, so the expansion was by design for situations such as this, most likely to accommodate large Pokemon that may be coming into his office.

In the center of the room, Andy saw that Xander’s desk was moved to the side to give room for the large device. The device was circular, with little “wings” that held a time gear spread all along the ring, with little conductor horns facing the center. The time gears were inserted into a slot suited for its size, and there were lots of wire connected to many outlets and power converters.

Rufus stood and faced the group. Off to the side, Andy could see that Bonnie had come along too. Andy didn’t know if this solidified the idea she was a spy, she was taken prisoner here, or if she were let free and chose to see it all end. “The preparations are complete,” the Feraligatr said, “And now we are to embark on an interdimensional travel the likes no one has ever seen. If we die, we will die knowing we fought for the freedom of many innocents. We have split our total group into two parties, one party will help setup with traps and other counter measures when X arrives, and the other will warn the natives about the coming attack, preparing them at best, evacuating them at worst.” He looked around to make sure everyone was listening.

“It would also be a good idea to prepare, but seeing as we are all here, I assume that has been taken care of. The trapmaking party will include myself, Josh the Weavile, Westley the Dewott, and Xander. The warning team will be comprised of Andy the Lucario, Claire the Braixen, General Samuel, Troy the Gallade and Bonnie. Based on our calculations, we will appear a ways off from a nearby Pokemon town. The Trap Team will go to the pre-calculated location within the town of Mr. X’s arrival and set up there. The Warning Team will head for the local elders and find a way to warn them. I will bring several of my men to help protect and assist both parties. Is that clear?”

“YESSIR!”

“Now, it’s time to turn the machine on.” He, Xander and Sam went towards a console that was a little ways off to the side. The pushed some buttons and entered some controls, and soon a whirring sound could be heard from the machine. The slots in the gears began to rotate, starting slowly but eventually began picking up speed until they were spinning rapidly. The humming turned into a slight electric cackle. On the tip of the spikes green electricity was building up until they all shot off at once and collided at the center. The lights in the office were starting to dim with all the power usage. At the center of the bolts Andy caw a pure white spark in the middle. It began expanding until Andy could clearly see through the spark. It was a lovely plain with clear skies and luscious green hills. The little window kept growing until it was big enough to fit even Xander.

Rufus pushed the last few set of commands before he left the console. “Everyone! Jump through the portal now!” Andy looked back at the portal and saw Josh jump into it, and land on the grassy plain on the other side. With safety assured, Andy jumped through.
