Yo-Kai watch is a popular, creature hunting game for 3DS that was recently localized outside of Japan. You may have seen it briefly in the new nintendo direct and thought: What is a Yokai? Well, fear no more for I have everything you need to know.

Now, the main plot goes like this: The main character finds a capsule toy machine in the woods next to town. When he tries putting a coin in and opening the capsule, Whisper, the Yokai butler is released. Whisper explains that Yokai are invisible creatures that can only be seen by a certain 'Yo-Kai Watch'. Yokai can harm people in the form of haunting them, where they'll give certain status effects (like hunger, illness, forgetfulness, etc..). The main character is then given the Yo-kai Watch and is assigned the task to solve the Yokai's problems.

Many similarities are drawn to Pokemon, but after playing and completing the game, I can say they are quite different, as compared to Pokemon Red and Blue. Yo-Kai watch has over 200 Yokai in the first game, and while Pokemon takes place all over a region, Yo-Kai Watch takes place in a single city, Springdale. (However, the city is very very large).Combat is also different, for instead of taking turns with one Pokemon out at a time, you have three yokai out of six who all attack for themselves, they'll attack without directions until they've built up their 'Soultimate Move', a big attack that can only be released once the player completes a small minigame-like task on the touchscreen (such as 'trace this' or 'touch all the dots!') .While this was out in Japan for two years before localization, it had managed to become more popular among children, as a recently made game franchise outsold a long standing company.
Yokai Watch 2 Ganso and Honke – 3,050,178

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire – 2,464,850

Due to Yokai Watch's massive success, The game has managed to receive a sequel and a handful of spinoff games. The third instalment of the game, due to be released next year, will be set in an American town instead of the usual Japanese-styled town.

Now, we've managed to come all this way without talking about the main mascot of Yo-Kai Watch, and without further ado, here he is:

The Picture above is of a Yokai called Jibanyan. Jibanyan is a red cat yokai who is the spirit of a cat who got hit by a car. Now thats sad. Jibanyan now spends his days with the protagonist fighting bad yokai.

And thats all you need to know about Yo-Kai watch, the popular video game franchise in Japan that is now localized all over the world. Hopefully this made you interested in trying out the game!

Pretty good and informative! That said, I could have sworn that this game was the one that took place in an American city (due to it being the first American release), but I could be wrong.
