2D vs. 3D platformers

All 3D Mario games are amazing , Mario 64 was such a leap in what a video game could be and few games even now can't match its charm and character, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were simply amazing, and Sunshine was unique as well with its open world gameplay.

I still prefer the old-school Mario games for their simplicity and addictiveness though. Super Mario World is arguably the fondest childhood memory of a video game for me, no game before or after it can match how great it was for me at the time.

I love a good 2D Mario game (like Impulse said, Super Mario World is fantastic) but right now I'd love it if Nintendo could make a good 3D Mario game like Galaxy.

In my opinion, both are good. The 2D games have more action and depend on your reflexes mostly to react quickly and your sense of Mario Physics. 3D games rely more on precision attacks, Making sure the enemy is in the right position before you land down on them to squash them. Both styles are good in their respective ways, It is hard to choose which one is better (for me)
What do you think? Which Mario style do you guys prefer? I would love to hear your opinions

One of the things I loved about Super Mario 3D World for Wii U was that it felt like a 2D/3D hybird - it was the best of both worlds in a sense. For any thinking about getting a Wii U, it's a game worth getting the console for!

Nice I might buy a Wii u around 2015 Lol. Yes, i have seen Super Mario 3D World and it is the best of both. that is a game that really is good in both ways, Action packed with 3D and 2D levels

I personally prefer the 3D game style for Mario, although I do like some of the original 2D side scroller games. The 3D games are more expansive and have generally been of higher quality imo (example: Super Mario Galaxy)

that isn't necessarily true, just because the graphics are better. The side scrolling Mario games have more action, and look at New Super Mario Bros.2, NSBW Wii. They are pretty high quality games.

I'm not talking about the graphics being better. The fact of the matter is that a 3D world can offer more depth in the gameplay and battles. Imo the boss battles in the 3D mario games are better than those of the 2D ones

Yes, that I can agree. But I like fast paced action and also the 3D style so Super Mario 3D land is the best for me.

3D gamss easily deliver better but the graphics are the main focal points. I don't really play 2D games unless I know they Really going to be good though.

Speaking of Mario, when are they going to revisit Mario Sunshine? I'd love to have some further adventures around Isle Delfino!

Back on topic, I also think most of the bosses are better in the 3D games. That said, my favorite Bowser fight might be from NSMB Wii.

i love mario games in 3d i have played all exept super mario 3d world. also i realy like side scrolling games they feel quite nostalgic but like 3d games better. and my fav fight is bowser and jr at the end of super mario sun shine.

I don't have a favorite 2D side scrolling Mario game...maybe the original?
As for favorite 3D world mario game, I'd have to say Super Mario Galaxy. It was a really well-made game for sure

I was like, born with NES so 2D side-scrolling style is my favorite ever. It's retro and such. But at least 3D-platformer style Mario games were good (and some of them were even awesome).

i grew up with 2d Mario and it was amazing ! so is the 3d versions ! i guess you are correct both are good in their respective ways - id say i play the one which I'm in the mood in for - sometimes 2d and sometimes 3d

3D Mario games are more about using different skills while exploring. 2D Mario games are more about how well can you jump. Because it seems that 3D Mario games (I have SMG2) seem easier to me than SMBLL I'm going to say both but 2D games get the edge.
