I'll go with 2D, since I grew up with them and have still stayed into them. Some of the newer 3D ones I just can't get into. Perhaps it's nostalgia blocking my few, but I really do like the side-scroller games the most.

I honestly am not a fan of 2D games. I enjoy playing some sidescrollers/platformers, but not for too long. I'd rather play a full 3D experience like Galaxy or 64 because you can move in so many different ways and have more freedom to explore. 2.5D games like Super Mario 3D Land have cool perspectives, but I'd rather play something that is full 3D.

I don't really like 2d mario games because I'm just not a fan of them :/. I didn't really like the new super mario bros series. I enjoyed super mario 3d land I like it more because you can explore more. I really want to try out sunshine, galaxy series and more ;)!

3D Mario games are amazing, I'll give them that, but which one I like better? That would be a simple 2D answer! I enjoy the old SNES Mario games more than the new 3D ones :p (3D ones; not including Mario Kart) but really the reason I like the old 2D ones is because I'm old school Nintendo and love the old classic systems and games! Everything after the N64 just wasn't as good! (Excluding the game boys) Still I love my 3DS and everything Nintendo has made including the new stuff! Nintendo forever!

I love the 3d Mario games instead of the 2d but i got nothing against them i just love new things when the first Super Mario bros was out and was in 2d people was going crazy about it now we've got them in 3d everything has change i wonder if we will be avaible to play as our own character in the 3d Mario games.

2D Mario Games have more difficulty to them as you can only head in one general direction. 3D Mario games have more variety, but less challenge. I like 2D Mario games better because they're harder to beat, plus I grew up with mainly playing 2D Mario games, so I've adapted to them more than 3D Mario games (Super Mario 64 is no exception).

I see. I like both of them because the full 3D games do not have the fast, action packed element the the Side-scrolling 2D games have, and they are sometimes easier than 3D games. (New Super Mario Bros. Wii vs Super Mario Galaxy 2)
I really love Super Mario 3D Land for that exact reason, action packed with a mix of both 2D and 3D.

I enjoy both for different reasons. I voted hard to decide because of it - some of my favorite games of all time are Mario games.

One of the things I loved about Super Mario 3D World for Wii U was that it felt like a 2D/3D hybird - it was the best of both worlds in a sense. For any thinking about getting a Wii U, it's a game worth getting the console for!
On that note the Galaxy games had a similar 2D appeal too (Galaxy 2 probably more) because it did have 3D levels however some were 2D like the 2 sections of the last galaxy in SMG2 and parts of the Clockwork Ruins which required some 2D skill more than 3D not that there wasn't any. So most people who like both styles aren't left out.

2D id choose.. Sure 3D has great features and (obviously) more depth to it. Still like I've said countless times I'm old school Nintendo :") side scrolling Mario for the win! 3D is also good, there's just a good nostalgic feeling to the 2D ones that just makes me so happy! I love the old ones! Especially the ones for the SNES ;') I'm not a 3D Mario hater though...

By 2D I mean things like New Super Mario Bros and by 3D I mean Super Mario 3D Land/World or Super Mario 64.

Personally, I tend to excell better in 3D platformers than 2D ones. This may be because I'm a coward in games and it's easier to dodge/run away in 3D.

I think both are good but today the three dimensional platforms are more attractive than 2d but that does not discount the fact that the two can be equally pleasing and fun for the audience not care if it's hard core or casual don't know how well but is mi opinion

I prefer the 3D games, I just never found the 2D Mario games to be fun, I found them all very boring :/ Do the Galaxy games count towards the 3D mario games aswell or do you only meant he classic ones like 3D Land/World?

I mean any game that is 3 dimensional, so Galaxy counts. If I named every single Mario Platformer I'd probably exceed the forum's character limit xD

I personally like 3D better. There's much more to explore and more hours of fun packed into them. 2D games are generally more challenging though, imo.

Bosses and the levels are much more detailed, and attract more gamers in general, rather than 2D.

I honestly prefer 3D.
  • 3D gives you a 'better perspective' of the maps and levels. You can actually have freedom to explore with 3D, since there is more of a variety of exploration (less challenge).
  • 2D sort of limits your view on the levels, and it makes you go in one general direction (makes it more challenging, though).
I have nothing against 2D. I just think that 3D Mario games are a bit better, because of the better exploration and view of the game. This is just my opinion.

I like the 3D games better. Well I like both of them, but after so many 2D games which are so alike they're starting to get a bit boring sometimes. I don't have that with the 3D games. When I'm playing the 3D games I feel like every level is realy something new.

I really like both 3D and 2D Mario games so this is a toughie. I would go with 3D Marios. That 3rd dimension really makes the 3D games fun. There are some amazing 3D Mario games like Mario Sunshine, Galaxy 2, 64, 3D World and 3D land. The 2D games are really fun like the new super mario games. Sometimes I want to play 2D platforming and sometimes I want to play 3D platforming. Most of the time I would go with 3D but I really like 2D too. Cast your vote in the poll and be sure to comment as well! :D

I would say the 3d games over the 2d just because super Mario 3d world/Land Wii U is so fun also the mario galaxy series they need more mario galaxy games btw, yes I'm talking to you, yes you nintendo! But overall I like almost all of the mario games especially mario kart 8 best MK game ever! But don't get me wrong the classic mario games are very fun and entertaining and still fun!

Overall, there were two Mario games that utilized 2D and 3D the best: Super Paper Mario and Super Mario 3D Land. However, I'd say 3D is better because there's so much more to explore. However, I think the 2D games are still fun, and they're great for people starting platformers.

I prefer 3D Mario games for a longer, more fleshed out experience. Sit down and play for like 2 hours.

I still like 2D Mario, can be fun to pick up and play every once in a while.
