Handheld?

Of course. While all the other consoles were promoting their home consoles, which required the player to specifically be set up at home in order to play, Nintendo's innovative handheld consoles could be taken anyway, allowing for total casual play. With the harsh divide between casual and hardcore* players, Nintendo essentially won over half the gaming audience in one swift move.

And it's gone on to become more and more popular of a design choice. From the Wii U, which featured a semi-handheld experience through it's screen controller, to the Switch, which is primarily used and marketed as handheld, Nintendo is moving further and further away from the home systems their competitors are so intent on keeping.

...Ironically, after focusing so much in this direction, Nintendo have finally begun to shift their aim towards more hardcore players with games like BotW and their new focus on the Fire Emblem franchise. If they keep heading in this direction, I fear their casual focus won't last much longer.

*By hardcore, I'm referring to players who are more typically accustomed to games than the mainstream, not adults who have spent 20 years trying to perfect Fox in Melee and only take a shower once every two months.
