No small New 3DS for North America

@3dsatackman I feel your pain, man. I love customized things so the changing faceplates would be a weakness of me. But then again, I need the XL model as my hands are really big. Don't worry, though. Nintendo just might be trying to trick us. They wouldn't do something to LOSE money. They aren't a charity, after all.

I honestly don't really care that much. The XL is superior in every way for me, with bigger screens, better buttons, fits nicely in my hand, ETC. Once I got my Pikachu 3DS XL I couldn't really go back to a small one, since the XL improved on it in so many ways. To be honest I think Nintendo didn't release the normal N3DS because the XL always outsells the original model nearly everywhere and because they likely didn't want the faceplates to become the next amiibo fad with retailers complaining about shelf space and what not.

I was going to get the New 3DS XL anyway so this news doesn't really matter to me.

Honestly, I'm surprised everyone doesn't want the XL anyway.

Dang it America! I was looking forward to the new one, I mean why down size? I can barely stand looking at the tiny screen of my DS Lite. I think they shouldn't mess with it and let it be.

But UK, Australia you guys are lucky preinstalled Majora's Mask awesome!

I think the New 3DS would have had a market in North America. There's always a market for inventiveness and customization. The ability to change the look of your 3DS without having to purchase a new model is ingenious, and when I thought both models were coming to North America, I spent a considerable amount of time scrolling through faceplates online. It actually had me thinking I might go with a smaller model in exchange for being able to update the look of my 3DS from time to time.

My terrible vision necessitates a larger screen, however; I would have chosen the New 3DS XL regardless... but that's just me, and not everyone's going to make a decision based on that reasoning. If my eyesight were better, I might have considered going with the regular New 3DS more heavily.

I'm disappointed it won't be coming to North America, because I think it would attract a lot of Nintendo fans. I wish they extended the feature of changing faceplates to the New 3DS XL. If they had, I feel I might have been alright with them cutting the regular New 3DS from the North American market.

I also wish they'd begin bundling chargers with the systems. Although it's an upgraded version of the 3DS and the same adapter works for each, they can't expect that everyone who purchases a New 3DS owns an older system or has a functioning 3DS charger.

This guy also said that Nintendo had made the choice. Since the Smaller 3DS didn't sell as well in Japan where it first came out.

"We think New Nintendo 3DS XL makes the most sense for our market."

Sadly, Nintendo is right with this statement. Any financial report or official published sales figure will tell you that the larger 3DS models vastly outsell the smaller 3DS models.

In Japan, where the New 3DS systems were released about 3 months ago, the New 3DS XL has sold triple of what the regular New 3DS has sold, despite being over 100 different faceplate designs for the smaller model..

Consumers have spoken. They want the larger model, not the smaller one.

Still, I think the regular New 3DS has sold well enough to justify an American launch this year. Perhaps a holday release to push holiday sales...???

I agree with you completely. Though it may not be as popular as its larger counterpart, it would have been nice to send a few to North America, just to see how Western consumers responded to it...

I won't hold my breath in anticipation for a holiday release, but on the slim chance it could happen... I'd be pretty happy. Would you (or anyone else reading this) be more interested in purchasing the smaller model?

Thanks for adding links, by the way. Very informative. :D

Most of the time, I've been usually going with the smaller models. Like for the DSI and 3DS, I've never bought the XL versions.
But even though it feels kinda good to try out a few new faceplates, I think I'll still go with the Special Editions for the first time now.

I am so sad because of this! :( I wanted the smaller version New 3ds because they have fully coloured buttons on them. The xl only has a print coloured. Nintendo:(! because of this I like the xbox controller more.

Lol, for once we have something in France that the US don't have (Club Nintendo, what's with the shifty eyes ?). Too bad it's something I didn't plan on getting -.-

I am very upset with this descion still. I been writing and calling for the hope of them releasing the smaller model. I hate the XL and find it way too big for my hands. It also does not have the faceplates which I love. I saw the New XLs out the other day, but I will not cave . I will wait for the model I want to come out.

I think that is kinda horrible that there is not going to be the New 3ds in the NA because some people don't prefer the XL and it has face plates which makes it kinda sad . I would have gotten that between that and the N3ds XL . Guess Nintendo thought that it wouldn't sell in NA but I think it would have really sell a good price and amount

I actually would buy the smaller New 3DS model over the big one, seeing how they have made the screen of the original 1.2 times larger than the regular 3DS model.
It's pretty unfair, as many people were looking forward to the smaller version. The reason people shyed away from the regular 3DS was because it was pretty uncomfortable to hold, and the screen was too small. The bigger screen as well as a better build would surely help promote the New 3DS in the NA region.
PS: I signed the petition ;)

I think it's kinda lame because i would have liked the exchangable plates that we could've gotten, like the xenoblade one for instance. Sometimes nintendo isn't fair at all.

Well, it's Nintendo done wrong. You guys didn't got the regular N3DS, and here, we got it, but the way it is marketed is honestly repulsive. They market it to death, to the point where I suppose that they're trying to make Europeans angry towards them.

Otherwise, it's still lame from Nintendo that you didn't got the N3DS (basic). Maybe wait for a Region3-like exploit on it, and import one (so, you could play NA games on a JP/EU console (PS: Don't pick EU, or you're screwed when it comes to the eShop) ?

I don't care at all about the regular N3DS not being available in the US for two reasons:
-I am not in the US :p
-I'll always buy XL versions because of my very long fingers.

What I care about though is the fact the XL doesn't have exchangeable plates, which is what you care about too in fact, according to your post. Plus, it is not available in white so I can only get an ugly console according to my tastes.

i agree, why wouldn´t they make at least 3 or 4 more colors, not only the ugly red one and the not-so-ugly blue one

Oh, they now support the N3DS XL ? Well I'll get a skin from them then :p
Because I am really unsatisfied with the regular colors and I don't like limited edition either since things are printed upside down.
