I'm gonna give the generic answer....

Try them all, everyone is different and there is no "best" weapon.

Just like Raotor98 said depending on the weapon you are most good at using that should be the best weapon for you but as you said you need something else to use than a sword to use try the bow hunter or the bow gun hunter.

Dual Blades, Great Sword, Long Sword, Bow, Hammer, Lance, Gun Lance, Light Bowgun, Heavy Bowgun, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive, Hunting Horn, Switch Axe, Sword and Shield. Though, not trying to be a dick, there wasn't really a point in posting that if you have no idea what choices there even are.

Well.. weapons are based on mobility, range, and damage type

Weapons based on mobility:
Criteria for this is Dodging w/ weapon equipped

Fast - Sword and Shield, Insect rod ,Dual swords, longsword, and light bowgun

Normal - Gunlance, bow, lance, switch axe, and charge blade

Slow - Heavy bowgun, Hunting horn, great longsword, and Hammer

Weapons based on range
Criteria for this is short range, mid range, and long range(for melee weapons) and mid range, and long range

Short range - Sword and Shield, and Dual Blades

Medium range - Hammer, Insect Rod, Light Bowgun, and Hunting horn

Long range - Longsword, Great Longsword, Gunlance, Heavy Bowgun, Bow, and Lance

Weapons based on damage type:
Criteria for this is slash and impact
Note: only 2 weapons use impact attacks openly(Hammer and Hunting horn).
Range weapons can be associated with slash types

TL;DR
I recommend using weapons with high mobility and high range, weapons with high spammability is also recommended for new hunters .. So for this one I'll recommend Longsword

or if you want another weapon then you can probably use Switch Axe.

Other recommended weapons are:
Insect rod
Sword and shield
Light Bowgun

I think all weapon that has shield is best,, because when you pinched, you can easily guard monster attack.
lance & gunlance is great at guarding but lack of mobility, or use great sword,sns & charge blade for good defense and you can evade too,by rolling.

And you can evade THROUGH an attack.

You're thinking Heavy BowGun, btw, both BowGuns do that.
