I usually go to the island and fill up my basket with rare beetles, but I also sell furniture I don't need at retail for a much higher price than what I bought it for (by not selling directly to the pink lamb but selling it at the blue counters) and whenever a villager is in retail while I am, I make them but it. They'll usually buy it no matter what unless the price is insanely high. You can also sell any double fossils you have this way.

If you are looking for a way to make bells extremely quickly, try fishing not Tortimer Island. It usually nets me anywhere from 80,000 bells to 120,000 bells, depending on the type of fish that I catch on the island. I wish it would have been this easy in City Folk, where your best bet for making anything was the occasional 3000 bell butterfly...
