“Hey, does anyone know where Selene went?” Thomas looked around and saw her near the Maze entrance. She was on her knees staring at something. Thomas ran to her as fast as he could.

“Hey there, Selene; what are you looking at?” Selene held up a flower made entirely out of bronze.

“Wow, that’s beautiful.” Selene nodded.

“When we get out of here, I’m going to give this to the person who loves me; and who I love back.” Selene dropped the flower into her pocket and stood up. She pat Thomas on the shoulder and walked back to the fire pit. Thomas watched as she sat on one of the logs that served as seats. Thomas went back and joined the rest of the group for a while. After the meeting, he sat next to Selene.

“Why are you so tense?” He asked. She was rocking herself.

“I’m not tense.” She responded quickly. Thomas laughed.

“Yes you are, I can tell.” Selene sighed and turned to look him in the eyes. Thomas was a little taken aback by the worry in her eyes.

“Fine, yes, I’m tense. Do you know why? It’s because the doors aren’t closing.” Thomas looked at the doors and saw that she was right. The doors were eerily silent and still. He grabbed a torch and joined the gathering crowd. Selene followed close behind.

“Galley, do you know what’s going on?” Winston asked.

“How should I know? But I’m betting they know.” Everyone turned to look at Selene, Thomas, and Teresa. Selene scoffed.

“If we did, we would’ve been hiding.” Selene looked out into the Maze.

“What would you be hiding from?” Thomas asked.

“Them!” Teresa pointed. Grievers were racing toward the opening. Everyone ran away yelling for everyone else to hide. Selene just stood there and drew her knife.

“Selene, are you crazy? You can’t fight all of them!” Newt pulled her arm but she stood her ground.

“Get everyone else hidden. I’ll buy you some time.” Selene charged towards the Grievers screaming. She was slashing at them and pushing them back. Everyone ran and most of them were able to hide before one escaped Selene’s blade. After it got away, they all followed. Soon they were all wreaking havoc on the Glade.

Selene was so focused on the Griever she was fighting; she didn’t hear the mechanical whir of gears. The griever’s tail turned into a needle and it stabbed at her. She dodged and ran towards the other Grievers.

“Galley, watch out!” She yelled and threw herself in front of Galley. She slashed her dagger too late and got stung. Galley watched in horror as she fell to her knees and grasped her gut.

“Selene!” Thomas yelled and ran towards her. He grabbed a pike from the ground and threw down his torch. Selene slowly stood up and picked up her knife. She yelled and sliced the Griever’s tail right off. The needle fell to the ground and she picked it up.

Galley fought the angered Griever until Selene stabbed it with the needle. The Griever writhed on the ground until it was motionless. Thomas and Galley stared at her as she stood there panting. She looked to them and smiled.

“Let’s go kill ourselves some Grievers.” She laughed and raced over to the next Griever. She kept stabbing and cutting until the other Gladers started helping.

Suddenly, Thomas found himself cornered between two angry Grievers. Thomas fought them off as best he could until Selene dropped by. She literally dropped onto a Griever and stabbed it repeatedly. It crumpled to the ground and she cut off its needle.

She was holding it triumphantly when she turned to Thomas. She dropped the needle and lunged at him. She brought him to the ground just as the Griever swung its tail at where his head was. She stood back up and attacked it with all her might.

“Is that all you got?” She yelled and brandished the knife in front of her. The Griever roared and stabbed at her repeatedly. She successfully dodged them until she lost her balance. Thomas could only watch as the needle found its target in her gut.

“Selene!” Teresa yelled from her hiding space. Thomas yelled and swung his pike at the Griever. It hit its mark and the Griever collapsed in a heap.

“Selene, are you all right?” Thomas grabbed her shoulders and held her steady.

“I’ll be honest, no.” Selene collapsed and fainted.
