I honestly wasnt following the hype for this movie fully, but a few of my cousins took me out to watch it anyways, and so I figured I'll try writing a review for it as well. So with that, lets go into review!
First Impressions:
As mentioned above, I dont necesarilly keep up with the movie hype or anything dc at all. So naturally, I know little to nothing about whos who in the movie. Well thankfully, the movie does a good job of introducing the main characters, their backgrounds, and how they ended up in prison (since they're all villains). The movie also takes the quote "Fight fire with fire" far more seriously than expected, by fighting metahuman terroristic acts with metahuman supervillains. An unusual way to combat it, but the agency makes it work out.
Plot:
The main plotline of the story, as mentioned above, is using these infamous supervillains to fight against an ancient witch building a machine to fill the world with darkness. Why did the government choose to rely on supervillains rather than superheroes for this job? Well, the movie didnt really do a good job of explaining that to us, so I kind of had that question lurking in the back of my mind as I watched. It wasnt until after I asked my cousins I watched the movie with that I realized that all the superheroes were actually doing something for the Justice League off of earth, so the only metahumans left were the chained up and imprisoned super villains.
Not only that, but there was a miniature side plot of The Joker trying to free Harley Quinn from prison as well. This occurs through short sublimal text messages The Joker sends to Quinn secretively, something she so eagerly desires. This plot doesnt conflict with the main plot of the story until the plan actually comes into play. The side plot isnt too distrcring either, in fact it gives more character to the villains, rather than just being a bunch of chained up baffoons it shows the audience more of what a supervillain is like. (Although The Joker does smile more than I would like him too @.@).
Special effects:
As expected, the use of special effects in this movie is huge, mostly towards the ending. The special effects used here are only to emphasize the greater power which the main characters will be up against. It doesnt act as a complete distraction nor does it make a scene look bad either. Overall this movie does a great job of using special effects without abusing it, and by doing so makes the important scenes stand out a lot better than the others.
Final Thoughts:
I personally enjoyed this movie a lot, and despite not being a DC follower, I still understood what was going on in the movie. The movie does a good job of not only attracting major DC fanatics, but also help people that may not have understood much about DC universe learn about whos involved and what they're characters are like. The movie also doesnt go too deep about core specifc elements that only hardcore DC fans would know, which is also a plus for non followers. The movie also uses a lot of paradoxes to convey certain conflicts and find unique ways to get around them as well. For someone that didnt follow DC or the hype for this movie, I think it was still great and I recommend it to both DC fans and people who are kinda sketchy about DC universe.
Final Score:
9/10
This was the first movie review I've done after a long time. I know I might have left some things out, but I plan on doing more of these in the future. I want to refine my movie critiquing skills more, so if there is anything I missed out on, just let me know, and I'll try to incorporate it in my next movie review. Until then, bye! Hope you enjoyed and let me know what you think as well
