Well usually finding the secrets in the levels can be a bit hard. So maybe a mario powerup that points you towards the hidden areas or towards the secret coins or whatever littered throughout the map. This sort of powerup would be super rare and you can buy it from a shop once you finish the game once. It would be super useful for completionists.
Another powerup idea is one which can completely stop time for a while. This could let you go through the level at your own pace. And it would make difficult levels easy because the enemies won't move at all. They can still hurt you though.

Cowboy Mario
Mario gets a cowboy hat and lasso, where if he lassos an enemy (from a short range) it will pull the enemy back to him (like a lasso would...) and then he hops off the enemy automatically. Would be kind of cool for vertical jumping challenges.
Not sure how this would work with spiked enemies...

have a few ideas some of which may have similar naturr powerups already.
one is kangaroo mario with boosted jump ability and can kick enemy in front of him but not effective on some bosses can jump sideways off of walls pretty high.
mirrior mario where he becomes reflective of projectioes and energy based attacks but cant take hits from direct contact physcal attackers like koopalings shell attacks or boomboom punches would cause one hit ko to mario despite being in a power up state.
