Maybe if you watched the Japan-only Nintendo Direct, you would have seen those.
Indeed, the information was delivered by Satoru Iwata, and he basically introduced two new 3DS models:

The New Nintendo 3DS, and the New Nintendo 3DS LL. Yes, mind the "New" prefix, it'll be used when I'll refer to these models.

While the New 3DS (smaller one) will be customizable with "Custom Plates" that will be sold for 1000 Yen (~10$), the New 3DS LL will instead get a new, metallic design.

You should also mind there will also be special bundles for the "New" models, that will feature a brand new Home Menu, depending on the console's design. In the video, as an example, if you had a Yoshi 3DS, the Home Menu got a design based on Yoshi, and on the Animal Crossing one, well, the Home Menu gets an Animal Crossing appearance.

Update: The N3DS (new 3DS) will also have two new buttons, ZL and ZR, and a second analog stick, smaller than the left one. It will also embark a new CPU, meaning that some games will be N3DS-exclusive, and non-compatible with regular 3DS systems.

Also, the N3DS' browser will finally be able to load videos, and downloads will be faster. There's even a rumour saying that you'll be able to transfer files to a PC without even removing the SD Card from your 3DS.

Finally, the N3DS will introduce support for MicroSD, and Amiibos through NFC, as well as a better 3D.

I couldn't take screenshots, because I was busy with translating what I can, but, once there will be screenshots, I'll publish them.

Anyways, thoughts ?

Now this announcement is good and bad.

It's good because the new 3DS improves upon the things that needed improvement. The new trigger buttons was needed as the 3DS triggers are sort of meh. The c stick would be very helpful and the improvement to graphics and performance is always welcomed.

The problem though is that this could mean that they'll be releasing games solely for this new 3DS and not the old one which really sucks for all of us with the old one. Unfortunately this is starting to look like it's actually true as from what we saw in Nintendo direct, Xenoblade looks like it's only for the new 3DS. I'm hoping that this won't happen, but I'm pretty scared now

This is exactly why I'm fearing and, why I'm about to explode. This almost sounds like a "Screw You!" from Nintendo. 3DS are already expensive, and now they do this. I hope that they'll have a plan for customers, so they'll be able to replace their 3DS(XL) for the New 3DS, because, I'm really mad.

And let's say it, Why ? It's nothing more than a 3DS with a Circle Pad Pro embedded in it and a new CPU !
So, they better try to find a way to trade the 3DS/2DS/3DS XL for a N3DS, because I bet I won't be alone to be really mad.
(Sorry if that sounds rude, but I feel like Nintendo basically tricked us because of what they have done...)

As long as you can still play games on the normal 3DS, I probably won't get this unless mine breaks or something.

Even if they do have a plan, I can guarantee it's not going to be cheap. And more importantly, I don't want to switch my 3DS! I'm more than happy with it now.
The problem with these plans is that they're only for NA/Japan/Europe, so for the other places, so this is an especially big "Screw you".

Of course it's possible we're reacting a little too fast here. There's still a large chance they might not make exclusives and it's more like the DSi to the original DS. So for now I'm cautiously optimistic

It's still not entirely clear if there's going to be any N3DS games, but it's becoming increasingly likely. Here's where nintendos lack of non-Nintendo developers is a real problem. Unlike xbox and the kinect they have the power to actually force this stuff on us

After 4 years, another Nintendo handheld rises... I guess in two years upon its release, game developers will start making games for N3DS. There will still be games for old 3DS (don't you say, I just have her for a year!), but better games (theoretically, in graphics aspect) will go to N3DS.

Yes, I think that they'll keep supporting the 3DS (XL) and the 2DS, they have to, because I just can't get past the fact that my 3DS is less than a year old, and then, this happens, so, even if graphically we get watered down versions of games, I want 3DS games too, and not N3DS games !

Yes, I hope they will still release cool games for 3DS..

It's how Nintendo handle this that matters. If they keep on releasing games like Xenoblade that only work with the new 3DS, they're shooting themselves in the foot, because lots of people won't be able to upgrade. If they release most major releases - at least 95% - on both the old and new 3DSes, then things might be OK. Either way, I can't help feeling a little wronged over this, given that the sudden-ness of this announcement gives it a, "Why couldn't they put that stuff on the original 3DS if they're doing it so easily with the new one?" feeling. Well, whatever. As long as most good games are compatible with both, I'm relatively OK.

I am definitely going to go on a rage if street passes aren't compatible between the systems.

Exactly how I feel. And I think that they will also push some future 1st-party games on it, because "Please, understand" the CPU is X MHz faster than on original 3DS/2DS/3DS XL.

I am definitely going to go on a rage if street passes aren't compatible between the systems.

That would sound stupid from Nintendo not to implement such a thing, but I understand what you mean. If they can be that evil, they can go farther and start acting like the evil twos.

Japan is a streetpass hotspot. "Not anymore!" Would what Nintendo is saying if they are not compatible.

Why ? You do live in Japan ?
And yes, I hope they are StreetPass-compatible.

Small Update #2: This is unconfirmed, but there's a rumour saying that special HOME Menu themes could also be released in a 3DS System Update in October for 3DS, 3DS XL as well as 2DS. Of course, you'll have to pay for them. I will update the post on the blog about it. (Well, I'll ask for an administrator to update it if the rumour is true :p)

No. I went there for vacation once, and got about 30 hits a day.

WAIT, WHAT? IT COSTS MONEY FOR A DESIGN THAT YOU PROBABLY DON'T HAVE? ....what about if your 3DS is Blue? Would the home screen be blue as well.... Or.... What? :panda:

Yes, you'll have to pay for additional HOME Menu designs. By the way, you're lucky to have been able to go there. I'm jealous :p But I'm not sure for special editions, I hope that the special HOME Menu will be offered with it.

In that case, I'll have to save up..... I hope its real, and i hope a price tag comes soon.
I also hope that the original 3DS will get those beautiful cases as well. It would suck for only the new 3DS to have it, but you never know.... *keeping finger crossed

Japan was fun, and the street passes complemented it nicely :p

So I used Google, and apparently if you convert from the Japanese prices, you'll find out that the New 3DS is worth £93 ($154) rounded, which is cheaper than the original 3DS price, as is the New 3DS LL which is worth £109 ($180).

Hopefully this bodes well when the actual prices and maybe an exchange program (considering I'm pretty sure all these prices are cheaper than the original counterparts) are revealed in other regions.

Yep, there will have to be an exchange program, otherwise, the New 3DS will become the new* PS Vita (-> Terrible Sales if you didn't got what I meant.). And they'd better ask the people if they want a N3DS XL or an original N3DS, because, I want the N3DS (not XL), to customize it.

+ Upscaled graphics don't matter that much to me (I bought my XL just because it was a special edition)..
*Highlighted the new for more confusion *evil grin*. This should have been called the Super 3DS or something like that. How about the 3DS+ ?

^^^^ that doesn't mean for sure that Nintendo will do it. But I will keep hoping :3

There better be something to knock our pants off. Maybe an awesome secret feature never revealed. Anyways, only a large surprise that literally makes me want to go to the washroom/get me hyped will influence me to buy it..... Nintendo is full of surprises anyways.
