So what does this mean for current 3DS owners?
I got my XL 2 months ago second hand along with PY and FEA for around 220$(European version) and now they announce a better version? Does any one know if it'll still be region locked? If it isn't then I'll gladly get a US version and still keep my current games, if not, well I'm screwed :(

Nintendo and Region-Free are two incompatible words. The N3DS will still be Region Locked. Hopefully, somebody will find a trick to make it region free. I sympathize, and welcome to the club of the "Less than one year 3DS and feeling trolled by Ninty".
The only region-free thing about the N3DS will be the plates :hilarious:.
And US/EU versions of the N3DS will be released in 2015/2016 (no exact info about it).

Hehe :D Now I'm just hoping it's like the DSi. Some better features(like the cameras) and a few exclusives(The DSi had a few but nothing major like Pokemon, Zelda etc.) but overall still the same console.

Around the same price of the regular 3DS and 3DS XL. The N3DS is ~$140 while the N3DS XL is ~$180 in Japan.

Oh, that's nice. I thought it would be like $240 and $280. So that means it is affordable. :D

Not if you bought your system with 2 games 2 months ago, using your parents hard earned money :meh:

I support nintendo. But i saw that they would be coming out with a lot of new games only for this system and i think that will clash a lot with the current 3DS only games. Nintendo is having a hard to getting developers to create games in the first place. There is not a lot of incentive to create for handheld systems when they can create for things like PS4 And XBOX and sell better. And i feel like developers will be encouraged to build for the new system.
But with what they did with the 2DS, they want to really open the market. Create a HUGE customer base. Handheld gaming always has taken a back seat to every other type. So i guess more systems, more people buying them, more games in development.

Wow that's pretty crazy awesome!! I can't wait to see how these devices will sell.. I have the original 3DS and am content with it, so I don't think I'll get any of the new ones, but they are amazing!!

I want to get this but it kinda bugs me that there will be N3ds only games and i hope that there will be a bunch of other home menu things other than acnl and yoshi. but hopefully there will be a huge difference of better graphics. but it is quite cool but i am not sure why it kinda bothers me for some reason.

Can't wait until the day Nintendo drops region lock :/
Hear, hear!

When I heard the news I was really happy because it corresponded with the news for Xenoblade Chronicles being re-released for 3ds. Even though I probably won't be getting this new model I'm glad people can experience Xenoblade on the go now. My only concern is if they're going to totally ditch the old 3ds as I jut bought one >.<

Looks like the N3DS and N3DS-XL will be region locked as well according to IGN :

Damn it, Nintendo ! Another bad move  !
When will they understand that they can earn some profit on imports, and that we'd like to play the whole 3DS library no matter where we bought our 3DS ? Once again, feel the irony of Nintendo trying to say no to hacking, and tease their fans even more to do so :/.

So, yep, I'm again disappointed in Nintendo for keeping rubbing the knife in the wound by leaving their terrible region-locking rules on the 3DS and on the N3DS. They're not doing smart moves, lately :(.

I'm completely unsurprised by this. I didn't expect Nintendo to finally realize that just maybe region locking is a terrible idea that should never have been in place at all. Really it's just another reason why I'm so disappointed with Nintendo after this announcement.
Nintendo does what Nintendo wants because they have the power to do anything they want.
