R4 card is well known in my country, but it only works for DS games. Well' it's still a piracy.
R4 cards are really rare here.

Same. I found my DS2 by luck. 2 minutes more and no chances to buy it again...

Tons here. Well, I don't have it because I often use eShop to download demos or watch videos.

Um...can someone explain to me what R4 cards are? I'm only familiar with some traditional PC-based emulators like desmume and project64.

It's basically a card with micro SD slot. You fill your micro SD with DS games, put it in R4 card, and play it in 3DS.

oh, so basically it's kinda like a "proxy server" for playing DS games on the 3DS? If so, that's an interesting emulating system...

I don't understand kind of term :D but your 3DS must have old firmware to run R4. Therefore you cannot open eShop because you have to upgrade the firmware.

Yup, my cousin had one of that and he updated his DSi system and the card was unable to use, you can't use most of the apps on the DSi/3DS when using your R4 card because those apps need to be updated often.

Yes, pretty much :D

Not like that...
The idea of the cartridge is load the games you want and make a fake protection so it's looks like original.

yeah, that's what I meant. The 3DS only reads the R4 card and assumes it's legit while the R4 card masks the downloaded files and uses them to emulate. Isn't that what's been said?

But it doesn't use emulation like a proxy server...
It just open the game, nothing more.

Or retro-compatibility can be considered emulation?

when I say proxy, I don't mean it literally (that would be weird). The idea behind proxy is that it's a middleman and that's what I was assuming the R4 card is like.

Use an Acekard, or a DSTwo if you update those as the updates are released you can still update your 3DS firmware and use them.

not original they don't make them anymore but there are many rip-offs that play SNES games on the market. I'd rather choose a Emulator.
There are good ripoffs out there, such as the Retron 5 which plays NES, Famicom, SNES, Genesis, GB-GBA (With border support). Plus they're cheap ways to legally own the cartridge so whatever I guess.
Also in response to the topic, I use them somewhat frequently but in general I do own the game, although FYI it is actually illegal to do so whether or not you own the game. Illegal Backups are Illegal. Although I will say there are some cases where you may have no opt out. Take Mother 3 for example. Or the early Touhou games. We have literally no way to play besides through that.

Yeah, some of the best games are Japanese exclusive unfortunately. Other examples would include AAI2 (with a fan translation project being worked on right now) and early Fire Emblem games.

probably shouldn't be supporting piracy on this thread to be honest...if you want to discuss emulators, go to the that thread I made on another section of this forum (probably an "Other things Nintendo" section)

Emulators are the best! The only down side to them is you cant trade to other games. I wish you could because then I could get all the pokemon in lets say emerald and transfer all the ones you cant catch in X to X and then ya know. That would be awesome. THey have lots of ups to them. theyre free, you can change the frame skip so you dont have to wait for everything, it just goes by fast. So yea

Emulators are a form of piracy though and you really don't have too much of an excuse to be using them for games that are in their prime in terms of sales....
