I saw passengers earlier this month.
I give it a V-list B-. The effects were impressive, there was plenty of cinist reference to the supporting mechanical props - us "ain't-what-it-used-to-be" type viewers get a nice laugh at the machine's expense - and the whole journey was as lonely and vast as the plot would have you believe.
Jim Preston's character was likable, and he underwent a few great transformations in the film, not all of them flattering, but indeed relatable given the plot. But he became a supporting character once Aurora Lane was introduced. From there the viewer starts over again, and Jim became a background character, offering wit and a warm bed to the promoted protagonist.
Although the romantic flow of the movie was predictable, and the sci-fi conflict wasn't exactly extraordinary, the film overall had some interesting steps in sci-fi film direction, and some eye-catching visuals here and there.
For couples, this may impress the boy a little more than girl. For those of you familiar with the sciences, I'm sure there's an "everything wrong with passengers" film for you and I to chuckle at. For everyone else, this was a modest film almost two hours long, but you'll likely lose track of the time, being partially immersed in the atmosphere.
A V-list B-.
