Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are the English dubbed names, IIRC.
In good 'ol Nihongo,
Sawamular or Hitmonlee is named after famed Japanese kickboxer Shiraha Hideki (白羽 秀樹) 's stage name, Sawamura Tadashi (沢村 忠), which is where the Sawamu part comes from.
Ebiwalar or Hitmonchan is likewise named after the late Japanese boxer Ebihara Hiroyuki (海老原 博幸) who was the first world flyweight champion, at least certified by the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Association. The Ebi in Ebiwalar's name is meant to be a tribute to him as he died 7 years from Pocket Monsters Red and Green Versions' release date in Japan.
As for Mew, I think Faraway Island as found in Emerald is actually Guyana in South America, which in turn means...
regions like those in South America and Africa do in fact still have a probablility of being represented in future games.
