I can't believe Nintendo did this. But there's a report on GameSpot:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/nintendo-2ds-launching-october-12-6413747?tag=Topslot;Slot1

Nintendo today announced an all-new piece of hardware: the Nintendo 2DS. The entry-level handheld will launch on October 12 alongside Pokemon X and Y for $130.

The 3DS currently retails for $170.

The Nintendo 2DS will play all Nintendo 3DS games and is backwards compatible with Nintendo DS titles. It will be available in two versions: black with blue trim and black with red trim.

The form factor of the Nintendo 2DS is completely different than the 3DS. The new model is not hinged. And though it features two screens (of identical size to the 3DS), it bears a more tablet, slate style.

The Nintendo 2DS features two cameras with which users can snap photos or record video. Users can't play back this content in 3D on their systems, but can insert their SD card into a 3DS to view their content in 3D.

Just because Nintendo is releasing a non-3D handheld, it does not mean the company is distancing itself from 3D altogether, as the 3DS will remain on sale. Instead, the 2DS is aimed at attracting more consumers overall through its lower price point, according to Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt.

"It doesn't mean that we are not committed at all to 3D and that we don't think that's a really valuable, unique eye-popping feature for a lot of gamers," Moffitt told GameSpot. "We just wanted to continue growing the installed base and needed to find a way to get to a price point that was more accessible for a broad swath of consumers."

"As we surveyed the marketplace, it seemed to us that there was an opportunity for something at that lower, entry level price point," he added.

Nintendo will also release a carrying sleeve for the 2DS. Check out images below for more.

I hope it's a prank. God, I hope it's a prank. If not, then this looks to be one of the worst-designed consoles ever. The 3DS may cost $40 more but it isn't uncomfortable.

I had to stop and see if it was april fools day, but really there's nothing wrong with this, it is aimed for younger players so let them do as they please, at least a niche group is being satisfied.

Everyone commenting on the article is already saying it's awful-looking, and I have to agree. The design is far too horrible. The positioning of the L/R buttons and circle pad is horribly awkward, there's only one speaker, etc, etc.

Looks weird, the button placement might be a bit awkward but for a price like that it may actually grab some attention. However, I don't think why anyone wouldn't go for a used 3DS instead of this awkward looking thing. :wacky:

The idea is cool, but the design is awful...

A Nintendo 3DS Lite would be better :p

I'm not a fan of the design but it's good for people who hates 3D and for those who wanted a "cheaper 3DS". I wouldn't buy it even if I was not an owner of a 3DS. I would have wanted to try out the 3D, ;)

In my case, I want the 3DS XL :woot:

Honestly, even I am questioning this ploy.

I think its perfect for a younger audience.

Think about it, the 3DS cannot be used for people 7 and under for various reasons, so this will attract a younger audience for Nintendo, and can help bring up sales. Who knows, maybe it might be a big hit.

...but still Nintendo, you really dropped to these lows?

I really don't like the button placement on that, considering this is for kids I would think they might have a hard time using it.

At first when I saw it, I thought it was a mini 3DS without the 3D.

I thought the same, but after trying a GBA emulator on my tablet with a similar button layout, its actually not really uncomfortable.

Just going to say you can't complain how uncomfortable it is if you never even touched or played with one. The guys at ign says it fine and felt like the Gameboy Micro or the Gameboy Advance. Also there are a lot of misconceptions with the single speaker but they said it will support stereo.

I expected a 2D 3DS eventually but the fact that they made it so badly designed is more surprising.

More surprising is that the console only have one screen... That break the concept of the console :dead:
